One Room Challenge Fall 2022 ~ Week 1

Hello and it’s good to see you all here! It has been a little while since my last pop-in sharing my favorite One Room Challenge makeovers from 2021. I took a little break to enjoy the slower pace of life, sharing quiet moments with friends and families (finally made it to Europe again this spring), celebrated seeing Chris’ condo (part of ORC Fall 2019, Spring 2020, Fall 2020) being featured in print and video toured by House & Home magazine, and that’s not all, I was secretly planning a “surprise” for my Dad.

Think about those makeover shows where unsuspecting homeowners went on a vacation and came home to a whole new space … YEP, that’s what I’ve been cooking up and that’s what I am tackling for One Room Challenge Fall 2022.

This project is extra special to me because this is my family home. My family moved to Canada over 30 years ago, and my Dad has lived in this house the entire time. Coming from Hong Kong in the early 90s where glossy 80s style reigned supreme, my parents embraced the western style and picked a home with some classic traditional elements. After inheriting small print floral wallpapers, ballgown style draperies, plush carpets in seafoam green, we added the three-piece matching sofa / loveseat / armchair set in the living room, and some sort of ok reproduction furniture (well too much money spent on them in my opinion) + an ornate mirror in the foyer to greet our guests.

As a design envy grew up during Trading Space 1.0, yours truly tried his first makeover at the living room and foyer by giving them a new cost of paints, new draperies, and wall art (within $1000 …in the spirit of Trading Spaces). A little scary in today’s standard but may I present the humble living room from 2002 + some random items I’ve placed in the room overtime in an attempt to give it a boost:

With such devastating before, you just know the after will be very satisfying. As for the foyer, it surely does need all the helps it can get!

One of the most fabulous things about tackling a space (or two) via One Room Challenge is that you have a deadline to motivate you + a whole community of designers and decorators to cheer you on at the finishing lines. Be sure to check out Week 1 of ORC Fall 2022 and see what hundreds of participants are up to over the next 8 weeks!
