One Room Challenge Fall 2020 ~ Week 3

Welcome to Week 3 of One Room Challenge Fall 2020! Can you believe we are halfway through the six weeks timeline and the room reveal is just around the corner? I better get to work (join me on Instagram for more behind the scenes progress) and get a few major items off my to-do list.

week 1 / 2

This week is all about built-in storage. As mentioned in week 2, I opted out of the builder closet in the bedroom because I want to maximize practical storage without sacrificing style. I know the final design will incorporate open and closed storage while keeping all the elements fairly timeless with resale in mind. Here are a couple of beautiful examples showcasing how you could navigate between fully custom built and a hybrid of custom + ready to go pieces to achieve the storage of your dreams.

One evening on my way home I came across a new Starbucks location and I knew an arch detail is destined to be part of my design plan. When the universe gives you a sign, you go for it right?

By flipping the location of the bed and the closet, I now have 11 feet in length plus 9 feet height at my disposal (minus a little bulkhead on the right). Here is my plan for the built-in solution:

Before I walk you through the installation process, let’s give this bedroom a reality check. Storage is always an issue, especially in condos. You can clearly see why we need a lot of practical storage to house all the essentials. See the 3 suitcases stacked at the top? Yeah if we have enough head space to stack them, we can do better than this to hide the mess.

This is how the bedroom looks like on cabinet install day. Refreshing isn’t it?

In an effort to keep cost low, we have gone with the PAX system + Komplement drawers / boards from IKEA. Then we built the top cabinets to get these towers to reach full ceiling height and ready for the custom white oak pieces to join the party.

Clearly I am obsessed with slat detail and arch motif in white oak. Remember what we did in the office?

The various custom components fit like a glove with our IKEA cabinets, and we are able to utilize an existing pot light as a puck light. Double win here!

With the arched doors up, we are ready for the “jewelry” of these cabinets: the hardware. I fell in love with the Crystal Cabinet Collection from EMTEK for its top quality all-glass construction with solid brass base, and the impeccable pairing of a classic bar pull silhouette with contemporary materials to strike a beautiful and very luxurious design statement. I have selected a matte black finish for the brass base for an extra modern appeal.

From hardware to soft touches, let’s take a moment to chat about another key feature in the bedroom: the headboard.

My dream is to create a headboard that spends the entire width of the room. Subtle in pattern but stunning in design, I can’t wait to make one similar to one of these inspirations.

I would love a headboard with a channel design but giving the tight timeline (and the budget), I have decided to create the channel effect “vertically” with this super soft and high performance fabric (perfect combo for a headboard) from the Ralph Lauren collection available at Calico. Since the channel effect is embedded in the fabric itself and by keeping the headboard at 48” tall, I was able to make this headboard with just over 4 yards of fabric with minimum wastage. I’d say that is good for the pocket book and the environment!

We will also be upholstering a vintage Sarrinen executive chair. I love giving a classic piece a new lease on life and the pale blue grey performance fabric + suede in ochre (as piping) from Calico are perfect for the occasion.

That’s it for week 3. Wallpaper choices and installation, along with full fabric selection and application are up next at week 4 of One Room Challenge.
