One Room Challenge Fall 2020 ~ Week 4
Welcome to Week 4 of One Room Challenge Fall 2020. Two weeks left and still some key items to tackle, we are working double time to get the bedroom done for reveal. From sensational wall covering, sophisticated upholstery, and dreamy chandelier, we have checked them off our list this week.
With logistics in mind, it makes the most sense to nail down and install wallpaper, especially when we are wrapping the entire room in it, before moving in the headboard and other furnishings. I know I want something warm, multi-dimensional, and luxe after dying over Nate and Jeremiah’s home with the copper inspired grasscloth wallpaper.
Knowing I love grasscloth wallpaper (after installing it in the home office and the living room), I simply couldn’t resist to yet pick another grasscloth for this bedroom makeover. After all, I do have a consistent wall-covering application throughout the entire condo and with such natural and timeless approach, I am confident that any future home owners will appreciate with my decision.
Here are a few potential candidates from York Wallcoverings:
One tip I couldn’t stress enough when choosing any wall covering (especially with grasscloth wallpaper due to the sheen and texture) is that you would want to put up your samples around the room and observe them throughout the day to see how they look at different time. A color or wall covering could look totally different from morning light to sunset / evening.
In my case, the two samples on the left have a much strong reflective quality due to the metallic undertone, while the two on the right with subtle sheen and look most consistent in different lighting conditions.
After careful consideration, I have selected Elegant Weave wallpaper in beige for its multi-dimensional color variation, the depth it gives to the walls, how well it works with the natural wood tones in the room, and that it still reads neutral … keeping resale in mind.
With no time to spare, our talented wallpaper installer came to the rescue. I love working with Jason because he’s so meticulous with his install by mapping out the pieces / measurements on the walls to ensure the seams are mostly hidden with minimum wastage. This preplanning step makes all the difference … the pieces are precut and labeled so there is no surprises and I couldn’t be happier with how the room turns out.
With wall covering completed, we are ready to pick up the custom upholstering pieces. Inspired by wall to wall upholstered headboard like this one, I am determined to create the look with this sumptuous channel fabric from Calico.
Knowing that we would not be able to get the headboard up the elevator to the 17th floor in one piece, we have designed the headboard with 3 pieces and they will be reassembled on site …. or so I thought.
See the left panel sitting on an angle? The pieces are a touch too big after factoring in the extra thickness of the padding and fabrics along the edges. The silver lining here is that at least the headboard isn’t too small. It’s far easier to trim the panel to size than to supersize it, especially when time and fabric (if I need to order more) are both limited.
A quick trip back to the shop and a fresh trimming of the two side panels later, our upholsterer came back for round 2. The pieces fit like a glove this time and not an inch to spare … proven + witnessed by my favoute multi-functional radiant receptacle from Legrand. No more wire / cable madness by the bedside tables!
Now let’s chat about the chandelier. I have been obsessed with the Cloud series from Apparatus since the first time we met. One of my favorite spaces featuring this fixture is the elegant, sophisticated, and dare I say sexy home of designer Brian Paquette. Every piece of furniture, fixtures, artwork has its own personality and merit to shine, yet they all work together harmoniously to create a welcoming, stylish, curated home.
Sadly the budget reality has brought me back down to earth and just like fate, Black Rooster Decor came to the rescue with this gorgeous chandelier with a similar look but a lot easier on the pocket book. The scale is just right (I love a slightly over scale fixture in a smaller space) and the aged bronze finish + the frosted glass bubbles help convinced my biggest critic: Chris!! He was not on board AT ALL since day 1 thinking it’s too big, it is not suitable for the bedroom, and he much rather us keeping the existing flush mount fixture.
Now I can happily report back he’s loving it! In his own words, he says it looks like cloud … and that my friend, is music to my ears.
Lots of finishing touches happening over the next couple of weeks including bedside pendants, drapery, accent pillows, artwork, rug and I can’t wait to put it all together. Here is a preview for Week 5 and thank you to all the amazing sponsors for working with me on the project!
